How to get to Metsovo
On the E65 from Athens, the Egnatia from Thessaloniki and Ioannina, by bus or by air.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Metsovo sits on the Egnatia motorway (A2), about 50 km and 40–50 minutes from Ioannina, and 217 km, roughly 2 hours 35 minutes, from Thessaloniki. From Athens, the E65 motorway has been open along its whole length since 24 July 2026: about 420 km, 4 to 4¾ hours. The nearest airport is Ioannina.

From Athens, on the E65
The fastest route since summer 2026: the A1 north for about 195 km, then the E65 (A3, the Central Greece Motorway) for 181 km to its junction with the Egnatia near Grevena, and from there 35 km west along the Egnatia to Metsovo. The E65 has been open along its whole length since 24 July 2026. The motorway’s operator, Kentriki Odos, quotes 4 hours from Athens to Metsovo; allow 4 to 4¾ hours, and longer in snow.
From Thessaloniki and Ioannina
From Thessaloniki, the Egnatia runs all the way to Metsovo: 217 km, about 2 hours 35 minutes. From Ioannina it’s about 50 km east, 40–50 minutes. The Egnatia’s exits for the area are 7 “Metsovo”, 7A “Anilio” (exit only) and 7B “Panagia”. Near Metsovo, the motorway crosses the Metsovitikos Bridge, described as Greece’s tallest bridge on ground-supported piers: 538 m long, with a tallest pier of 102.8 m.
By bus
KTEL buses link Metsovo with Ioannina and Kalambaka. From Athens or Thessaloniki, you usually take a bus to Ioannina and change there. Timetables change with the seasons, so check them with KTEL Ioannina (+30 2651 083071, eticket.ktelioannina.gr) before you travel. If you’re coming by bus, mention it in your request and we’ll tell you how to get from the stop to our gate.
By air
The nearest airport is Ioannina “King Pyrrhus” (IOA), 48–56 km and about 50 minutes by car. Thessaloniki (SKG) is about 234 km away, roughly 2 hours 50 minutes, and Preveza–Aktion (PVK) 143 km, about 2 hours 20 minutes. Check with the airports themselves for which airlines fly each season.
The last few metres
In Metsovo you leave the car in the underground municipal car park next to the house: 3 levels, paid. From there it’s a few steps to our gate, and stone steps down into the courtyard. The village lanes are narrow and steep, so the car stays in the car park until you leave.

No; the nearest is Ioannina, about 50 minutes by car.
Will I have to cross the Katara pass?
No, if you come on the Egnatia: Metsovo has its own exit. The old road over Katara (about 1,700 m) calls for care in winter.
Is it a good base for Meteora and Zagori?
Yes: Kalambaka is 87 km away (about 1 h 15 min) and Monodendri 80 km (about 1 h 35 min).
