02 BEHIND THE KASTRO
A hill that was once a fort.
The house stands right behind the Kastro — the grassy hill that formed over Metsovo’s Ottoman fort (1864–67), which fell into ruin after the liberation of 1912.
-
The fort
The Ottomans build a fort in Metsovo, with a mosque inside it. It houses the administration and the garrison.
-
Liberation
At 6 in the morning Greek troops, Epirotes and volunteers from Metsovo attack. At 4 in the afternoon the garrison of 205 men raises a white flag inside the fort.
-
Still standing
The French linguist Hubert Pernot photographs the fort. It is still standing.
-
After
The hill
The fort slowly falls into ruin and is covered with earth. The grassy hill that formed over it is still called “Kastro”.

Today
The benches of the Kastro
On the main square, with a view the municipality calls “unique”. Right behind the Kastro stands our house.

03 THE COURTYARD
Four doors, one courtyard.
Paved in stone, in two patterns, with roses, hydrangeas and cypresses in pots. You come in through an iron gate in the stone wall; stone steps lead down from the lane. The courtyard table is shared by the four suites.

04 THE NAMES
Why Vlach names
Metsovo has a Vlach name too: Aminciu. Vlach, or Aromanian, is a Romance language descended from Latin; until the early 20th century most women in Metsovo spoke only Vlach, and older residents still speak it on the benches of the square. The suites take their names from its numbers: unã, dauã, trei, patru, that is one, two, three, four. Aromanian has no single official spelling; Duáo is our way of writing dauã, or dao.
On Úna and Pátru the accent marks the stressed syllable; Tréi has only one syllable, so there it’s just decoration.
If you speak Romanian, you’ll recognise them: una, două, trei, patru.
