METSOVO ALL YEAR
Metsovo in winter
When it snows, where to ski, roads and chains, and a snowy day on foot.
THE SHORT ANSWER
In Metsovo, snow is likely from December to March but never certain: in January, the coldest month, average temperatures run from −1.9 to 4.1 °C. For skiing there’s Karakoli, 1.5 km from the village, Profitis Ilias–Politses, about 4 km away, and Anilio, all whenever the snow allows. The Egnatia motorway gets you here without crossing the Katara pass; keep chains in the car all the same.

When it snows
Metsovo’s weather station, at 1,240 m, belongs to the National Technical University of Athens — officially the Metsovion Polytechnic, named after its benefactors from Metsovo — and runs with the National Observatory of Athens. Its averages make January the coldest month: an average low of −1.9 °C and an average high of 4.1 °C. The village centre is about 85 m lower, so a touch milder.
Frosts cluster from December to March. That is when snow is likely, as it is in November or April, but it is never guaranteed: in January 2026 the station counted 17 frost days and a low of −9.0 °C, while December 2025 had only 7. If you’re coming for the snow, keep your dates flexible and sign up for the first-snow alert.
Skiing near the village
Karakoli. On the edge of the village, 1.5 km away. Its single chairlift was built in 1968, has 82 seats and climbs from 1,340 to 1,585 m, serving 3 runs of about 2.2 km in all. It is run by the Baron Michael Tositsas Foundation. Plenty of people ride it just for the view: according to the municipality, €3 one way (€4 for skiers), 09:30–15:45.
Profitis Ilias – Politses. About 4 km from Metsovo, at 1,360–1,620 m: 5 downhill runs and 1 endurance track, 4.0 km in all, served by 3 T-bars and one chairlift. There’s also a 300 m synthetic run and a 72 m snow-tubing lane. Open December to March, 09:45–15:45; the chalet stays open all year.
Anilio. Anilio Adventure Park, at 1,680–1,850 m, is 7 km from the Anilio exit of the Egnatia. It opened in 2012, and the municipality describes it as Greece’s newest ski centre. On weekdays the last lift leaves at 15:15; at weekends it runs 08:00–16:00. In winter 2025–26 the Chalet Chamois opened on 20 December, while the skiing waited for snow.
These details come from the municipality and the ski areas and change from season to season; ask us before you set off.
Roads, chains and parking
The Egnatia motorway (A2) crosses the Pindus through tunnels; the Metsovo tunnel is a twin bore, 3.5 km long. Metsovo has its own exit, so there’s no need to climb to Katara. The old road (EO6) over the Katara pass, at about 1,700 m, has the views, but in winter it calls for care: take it only once you’ve checked conditions.
From December to March, carry chains and practise fitting them before you need them. In the village, leave the car in the underground municipal car park next to the house; from there, everything is on foot. The lanes are narrow, 2–4 m wide, and the cobbles have raised strips across them for grip; in snow, wear shoes with a good sole.
A snowy day
When the snow keeps the cars in the car park, Metsovo stays close. The Averoff Gallery is 290 m from our gate, on the level, with Greek painting of the 19th and 20th centuries; it closes on Tuesdays. The Tositsa Mansion, 460 m away with a climb of about 46 m, is a Metsovo mansion furnished as a museum, with a guided tour every half hour; it closes on Thursdays. At Katogi Averoff, 14 minutes’ walk away, the cellar tour takes about half an hour, the last at 15:00. And the square, with its tall plane trees and cafés, is 180 m from us.

Check the “Now” line on the home page: temperature and conditions from MET Norway, refreshed every half hour. For snow on the ground, write to us and we’ll tell you what we can see from the balcony.
Which ski area is closest?
Karakoli, 1.5 km from the village, with a 1968 chairlift and 3 runs. For more runs, Profitis Ilias–Politses (about 4 km) or Anilio.
Do I need snow chains?
Yes: from December to March, keep them in the car. On the Egnatia you don’t cross the Katara pass (about 1,700 m); if the snow gets here before you do, we’ll write to you about the road.
