Christmas is when Metsovo fills up first: at Christmas 2024 local accommodation was 95% full. On New Year's Eve the square sees the year in with music, treats and local produce, and on New Year's Day the municipality holds a concert in the main square. In nearby Milia, on 1 and 2 January, masked 'Arakoi' go from house to house and the party ends in the village square.

PRACTICAL

The holidays book up early; send a request 2–3 months ahead. The square's programme is announced in the last days of December on dimosmetsovou.gr. The Averoff Gallery opens on public holidays too, except Tuesdays.

A CAVEAT

The programme changes every year; what we describe is from 2024 and 2025. We found no Christmas market in Metsovo.

In the late 1950s Evangelos Averoff planted what the winery calls Greece's first Cabernet Sauvignon here.

Tip: Open daily 10:00–16:00, last tour at 15:00.

The Metsovo table

Metsovo cooking rests on pies, 'the triumph of Vlach cooking' as Wace and Thompson wrote in 1914, with leek pie counted as the Metsovo pie, and on roast meat.

Tip: We do not list taverns we have not checked; when you arrive, the hostess will tell you where we eat.

Metsovone is a smoked, semi-hard pasta filata cheese, a protected designation of origin since 1996, aged at least 3 months.
