WHERE
Katogi Averoff

In the late 1950s Evangelos Averoff planted what the winery calls Greece's first Cabernet Sauvignon here. The Yiniets vineyards, Vlach for 'vineyard', grow at 950–1,050 metres, and since 2024 'the vineyard and wine traditions of Metsovo – Katogi Averoff' are listed in Greece's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The 30-minute tour goes through a cellar of more than 1,200 oak barrels.

WHO IT SUITS

  • couples
  • a rainy or snowy day, without the car

PRACTICAL

Open daily 10:00–16:00, last tour at 15:00. Tastings must be booked at least a day ahead (+30 26560 31490). The winery says bears once ate almost a third of the Traminer harvest, and still visit the vines.

A CAVEAT

'Greece's first Cabernet Sauvignon' is the winery's own claim; always attribute it.
