Its Kale, Ioannina

Ioannina, with its walled old town, the Its Kale citadel and Lake Pamvotida, is 40–50 minutes away on the Egnatia. Zagori, 46 villages and more than 160 stone bridges, has been on UNESCO's list since 2023 as the 'Zagori Cultural Landscape'; Monodendri is about 1 hour 35 minutes away.

WHO IT SUITS

  • walkers heading for the bridges and the Vikos gorge

PRACTICAL

Meteora and Zagori lie in opposite directions; keep a day for each. In winter, ask us about the roads before heading for the mountain villages.

A CAVEAT

Vikos gorge length and depth differ between sources; we leave them out.

A museum of 19th- and 20th-century Greek painting, open since 27 August 1988, with more than 700 works; about 250 hang permanently, from Gyzis and Lytras to Parthenis, Ghikas, Moralis and Tetsis.

Tip: Open daily, including public holidays, 10:00–16:00, closed on Tuesdays.
