Great Meteoron monastery

At Meteora, on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1988, 24 monasteries were founded on the rock pillars; six survive and take visitors. Kalambaka is 87 km from Metsovo, about 1 hour 15 minutes by the Egnatia and the E65.

PRACTICAL

Each monastery closes on a different day. In winter (1 Nov–31 Mar) the Great Meteoron closes Tuesday to Thursday and Varlaam on Thursday and Friday; in summer (1 Apr–31 Oct) the Great Meteoron closes only on Tuesdays. Entry is €5 per monastery, cash. The monasteries change their hours without notice; check on the morning of your trip.

A CAVEAT

Hours come from a private guide (Visit Meteora) and sources disagree on winter closing days.

Averoff Gallery

A museum of 19th- and 20th-century Greek painting, open since 27 August 1988, with more than 700 works; about 250 hang permanently, from Gyzis and Lytras to Parthenis, Ghikas, Moralis and Tetsis.

Tip: Open daily, including public holidays, 10:00–16:00, closed on Tuesdays.
